Recently retired manager and retained farm advisor

My career began with a job on John Fenton’s arable farm on the outskirts of Ipswich. After 18 months I felt the need to try something completely different and joined the Royal Navy, enjoying two very formative years. I returned to civilian life with a job repairing shipping containers while I searched for a route back in agriculture. Eventually I took up a position with Andy Mayhew at Waldringfield, working there while attending Otley agricultural college & then Walford College in Shropshire to study for a National Certificate in Farm Management. I returned to Andy at the end of the course, taking a role as farm foreman, where I stayed for six years.

Unable to secure a management position on a farm at that time, myself and a good friend set up a contracting business, J&A Farm Services, which we ran until I joined HFN in May 1997 as Farm Manager. I retired from my role as Farms Director from Home Farm Nacton in May 2023 but will continue as an advisor for the farm, to be reviewed after a year.

I now manage 1800ha of farming operations in East Cambridgeshire under various land agreements, growing combinable crops and potatoes on a range of soil types for a variety of markets.
