Phil Howell

Head of breeding, NIAB Cambridge

Strategies for disease control in a changing climate: where next?

Phil has worked for almost 30 years in crop genetics, including ten years at Syngenta where he bred several RL varieties. Since 2007, he has been instrumental in establishing NIAB’s leading cereal pre-breeding position, crossing and selecting within diverse pre-breeding germplasm including major collaborations ‘Designing Future Wheat’ and the IWYP European Winter Wheat Hub. Currently, Phil is working across a range of species including wheat, barley, legumes, oilseeds, and fibre crops, including spearheading NIAB’s legume improvement programme. His research interests broadly centre around improving yield and quality under reduced inputs, including incorporation of novel genetic diversity and F1 hybrids.
