Winter Linseed is gaining significantly as ‘00’ OSR growers look for a viable alternative break crop for this autumn.

The Winter Linseed harvest has already started, and the first results indicate that growers are achieving yields in of 2.7mt/ha (1.1mt/acre) with one grower in Norfolk said his linseed harvest was “Chopping a treat!”

Positive feedback from experienced growers is generating interest among new growers too as Premium Crops report sales for 2020 are already exceeding the total acreage placed for this harvest.

Sown after oilseed rape, winter linseed presents a much wider sowing window, thereby relieving time pressure on resources at a busy time of year; and, unlike oilseed rape, Winter Linseed does not suffer from any flea beetles at all.

Lower input costs than OSR and buy-back contracts available starting at £350 per mt make Winter Linseed a profitable alternative for sowing this autumn.
