The British Geological Survey at The CropTec Show 2018
The British Geological Survey (BGS) has been supporting the UK’s economy and society with geological knowledge since 1835 and would like to apply more of its expertise in the UK landscape to assist the agricultural and agronomy sectors.
The UK Soil Observatory (UKSO) is a website (www.ukso.org) hosted by the BGS in collaboration with other institutions to provide and share free information about the soil environment across the UK. The current map viewer allows users to access over 150 layers of soil and terrain mapping as well as contribute their own observations. Whilst it is popular with environmental and soil scientists, we feel that it has always lacked a dedicated role for the farming and agronomy community. So, as part of a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funded programme, the BGS would like to work with more farmers and agronomists to make the UKSO website easier to use, more data-rich and a better toolbox for agri-business. To do so, we would like to ask for your help!
BGS will be at The CropTec Show 2018 on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th November, which gives delegates an opportunity to:
- See what we currently do on UKSO;
- Take part in a survey to help us design future UKSO data and services;
- Shape the future of soil information from BGS.
BGS have put together a quick online survey (5min) to collect valuable feedback from farmers and agronomists to make our UK Soil Observatory website (www.ukso.org) and map viewer easier to use, more data-rich and a better toolbox for agri-business.
The survey is completely anonymous and will allow farmers and agronomists to have a say in how more free soil data and information can be provided by the UK Soil Observatory, so please take part below:

So, please come and visit us at the BGS stand, and have a say in how more soil-data and information can be provided by the UK Soil Observatory!
