Michelin makes ‘2 in 1’ tyre technology a reality

Michelin’s revolutionary EvoBib agricultural tyres are expected to be a hot topic of conversation at CropTec 2017 – standing out for being one of the biggest tyre innovations of the last 12 months.

The EvoBib tyres were awarded the prestigious SIMA Innovation Gold Medal for being the first ‘2 in 1’ farm tyres, thanks to their smart tread pattern that evolves to match the application.

First displayed in public at SIMA in March 2017, EvoBib tyres are now undergoing customer testing in the UK – ahead of their planned launch onto the original equipment and replacement markets. Unlike any previous Michelin agricultural tyre, they have been designed to support farmers who increasingly opt for larger machinery that must perform both in the field and on the road.

Anna Lafford, Michelin’s Operational Marketing Manager, explains how the tyres work: “When set at high pressures for road work, the tyres’ central band grips the road providing the tyre with a road optimised profile. The adapted tread pattern gives a smoother vibration-free ride, while saving farmers fuel and improving safety.

“But in the field, at low pressures, the tyres’ footprint spreads across a wider surface, helping to boost traction while improving soil protection. Compared with a Michelin AxioBib tyre of the same dimensions, our EvoBib ‘2 in 1’ tyres have demonstrated a 20 per cent increase in ground contact patch.”

Lafford describes the tyres as “a real game changer” and says the fitment is the latest in the line of innovative tyre technologies brought to market by Michelin.

The patented technology was developed by Michelin’s 6,700-strong team of R&D scientists and the company believes that the new technology will help farmers face the challenge of growing food sustainably at affordable prices.
